Many people are puzzled at the strong support for Donald Trump by US evangelicals. The answer largely lies in the deep history and mythology of the modern USA, which stretches back to its 17th-century roots. Although the current polarization in US politics is related to “culture wars” that have accelerated since the late 1960s, the roots lie much deeper. What is rapidly becoming a “battle for the soul of America” has its origins in contested ideas of what constitutes America itself.

Martyn Whittock graduated in Politics from Bristol University, UK, in 1980, where his degree special studies were in radical Christian politics and theology of the 17th century, and also the development of the Soviet State. He also studied US politics. He taught high school history for thirty-five years and developed an interest in early medieval history (especially Anglo-Saxons and Vikings). He has acted as an historical consultant to the National Trust, the BBC and English Heritage. He is a Licensed Lay Minister in the Church of England and is the author or co-author of fifty books, most recently Mayflower Lives (2019), Trump and the Puritans (2020) and The Secret History of Soviet Russia’s Police State (2020).
