Stewardship

What an amazing fall we’ve had at CCSM talking about our spiritual revolution.  We’ve learned about finding God in many different places – the dirt, the sky, the water around us.  We all see God in different ways, yet are all connected through this amazing place we call CCSM.  I am thankful for so many things, including the community we share.  It has become clear to me that we no longer “do” church the way we did when we grew up.  Our community is strong because we connect in so many different ways and on so many different levels.  As we are planning for programming and budgeting for 2019, we are reminded of stewardship.

In the spirit of revolution, I am hoping that we can think about our giving in a different way than we have before. Do you pay your mortgage electronically every month?  Do you donate on a recurring basis to important organizations such as KQED?  I’m excited to announce that this year, we our launching our stewardship campaign by offering an opportunity for our congregation to become sustaining partners in the Spiritual Revolution we’ve been talking about for the past several weeks.  In that spirit, we’re asking that you consider a sustaining pledge whereby you will commit to a regular amount given to CCSM which will roll over for three years.  There will be no need to complete a pledge card each year.  If you choose to increase your donation because of an increase in your compensation or an unexpected bonus, then you may make that change.  On the other hand, if you find yourself in a challenging position financially, you may also make a change.

Stewardship is a word we may not use as much anymore, but it is an important word. I look at stewardship as a means to managing my blessings so that I may share all the gifts I so richly receive. For many of us, stewardship can be thought of as administrating the abundance in our lives. Stewardship is responsibility, giving is an act, and generosity is an attitude. Together at CCSM our individual stewardship allows us to be communal stewards of the great gift of this spiritual community with all that it offers and all the lives it touches.

CCSM is a voice for progressive Christianity, social justice, and community outreach.  Without prayer support and unmistakable commitment to our guiding principles, no matter the depth of our budget or sturdiness of our building, our public influence lacks conviction and we cannot effectively speak truth to power.  It is the stewardship of your spirit that inspires leadership to stand in the face of adversity, to hold community gently in the face of tragedy, and to rejoice in the wonders and mysteries of our lives.

Please join me in continuing the exciting journey we are on at CCSM, by becoming a sustaining partner.  We are hoping to build a firm foundation for multiple years, rather than just one year at a time.

There are a number of ways to give — we hope you’ll choose one below and that many of you will choose to become sustaining partners.

What Is This Year’s Pledge Goal?

Here are the totals from the last 4 years:

2015 – $573,641

2016 – $578,701

2017 – $586,830

2018 – $611,874

Since so many people have moved away in 2018, and since we have lost a number of our “church pillars”, this year we are hoping to increase to $620,000.

This is a modest gain but will allow us to compensate our staff in a more equitable way and maintain all our current programming.

2018: A Transformational Year

Read just a few highlights of CCSM ministry in 2018 that your giving made possible.

A Deeper Reflection on Stewardship

A financial pledge is an annual monetary commitment from each one of us that enables CCSM’s leadership to set a budget for the upcoming fiscal year.  Sustained giving provides our church with the means by which we assess priorities in a planned and thoughtful way.  Additionally, it allows us individually and as a faith community to align our giving with our values.  Having a stable, well managed financial foundation permits CCSM to make plans and build programs around our guiding principles as well as to respond to the needs of our members, our neighborhood, our world.

Determining the amount of one’s financial pledge is a matter of discernment and prayer; considering answers to these questions may assist you in formulating your response to the call for stewardship of resources:

How much am I being called to give?

What amount or percentage of my income seems significant and responsible as a pledge?

How can my pledge be a tangible representation of the benefits I receive by being part of the CCSM family?

Do I have other financial resources which might help secure CCSM’s economic stability now and in the future?

Let’s continue with Stewardship of the Heart . . .

As the hands, feet, and face of God, we are called to share not only our material resources, but also our giftedness and talents.  Stewardship of the heart provides some of the means by which we can ensure that our physical building is a safe, adequately maintained, and a welcoming sanctuary.  Those who volunteer their abilities and skills help us control costs and take pride of ownership.  Those who donate supplies, goods, and services help us live into generosity.  From a smiling voice on the other end of a phone call, to climbing a ladder with a can of paint; from cleaning and organizing a closet, to gracing fellowship hour with a homemade treat:  all of these are ways to add a priceless dimension to your pledge!

Let Stewardship of the Spirit be an ever-present Benediction . . .
